Fano 4-folds with large second Betti number

Abstract. We will start by explaining what Fano varieties are and their role in the study of complex projective varieties from a birational point of view.
Then we will review the classification of Fano varieties up to dimension 3.
Finally we will focus on the case of a Fano variety X of dimension 4, and discuss the following result: if X has second Betti number > 11, then X is a product of surfaces.
